A novel fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane elastomer as the core sandwich material of the ship–plate system

Abstract A novel low-cost polyurethane (PU) elastomeric material reinforced with mat-form fiberglass for alternative ship was developed. The hand lay-up technique used to prepare samples glass fiber contents of 0, 7, 9, 11, and 15% by weight. Several tests, including density, tensile, hardness have been conducted investigate the effect content on properties developed materials. test results found that only composites 0% 7% (PFg-7) had met all Lloyd’s Register criteria. PFg-7 has a density 1,098 kg/m 3 , 66.15 shore-D, tensile strength 21.32 MPa, an elongation at break 47.06%, higher hardness, elastic modulus, yield than PU. PFg-15 achieved highest strength, which were 1,228 68.85 32.13, 2,176, 30.89 respectively. modulus 5.6 times those PU but did not meet PFg-9, PFg-11, showed brittle properties, as indicated relatively high compared from various references.
